Of Gems & Geodes – The Morning

Jewelry Fair 2010 Ib
Long ago, in a time when magic and myth still kindled in the hearts of men, a rosy dawn shone warmly upon a familiar market…

This past Friday marked the beginning of Jewelry Fair 2010, one of the major fashion exhibitions of the year. The theme this season is “Beauty & the Beast”, and when visitors arrive in any one of the four sims, they are instantly transported to a storybook realm. Delora Starbrook and Dream Resistance collaborated to produced this amazing build that both immerses the virtual explorer and allows patrons to shop with relative ease. For me, the concept and environment immediately swept up my imagination, creating its own version of the classic fairytale. As the Jewelry Fair contribute welcome you to their gala, I invite you follow the journey of a unique character as he explores the land and his heart.

The Forest

The morning mist slowly pulled back over the sleeping fair grounds as villagers rolled out of their snug sheets and rose from their warm cots. Orange, pink, purple and teal bolts of linen were tossed from their trunks and shaken through the air before running across the bare planks of the stalls, and as the last of the dew drops slid from sight, the streets began to stir with life.

Simple shoes and classic carts carried the provincial people over the cobblestone roads as they followed their morning routines: buy the bread, sell the sausage, haggle  over the heifer for the umpteenth time, trade tidbits of gossip. Everyone accepted this standard of living and were content not to stray from it.

Well, everyone except Bellamont.

Tall, dark, and handsome, Bellamont was the quintessential embodiment of masculine beauty. But he was, as the other villagers whispered behind his back, odd.

Bellamont spent his days wandering the through the nooks and crannies of the village, telling stories to strays and listening to the gospels of birds. He preferred to take in the beauty of the moment rather than spend it picking and scraping at mundane affairs. That was not the say he was lazy, however- his mother never had to ask twice about a chore or errand. The other villagers were constantly warning her that he was bound to shimmy up a bean stalk and enrage a giant or two, but the plump, silver-haired widow just brushed them off with a smile.

This morning, however, the young man was particularly restless. As much as he avoided the townsfolk’s idle prattle, the wind sometimes pressed word to him against his will– and this time, it was more discomforting than being called a clown or laggard. From what he gathered, a number of village vixens were plotting to tie him up in a wedding knot, believing that they could then do whatever (and whoever) they want since his head was always up in the clouds. Climbing to the top of the market’s hill, he glanced behind himself at the palette of colors and mingling motions behind them. A swift breeze pushed against his back and brushed through his hair…

Today was the day for adventure.

And so ends the first chapter of this retelling of Beauty & the Beast and a glimpse into the magic created by the Jewelry Fair. However, I cannot wait for the other parts of this story to show you what else this amazing build has to offer:

Jewelry Fair 2010 VII

The Beast’s Castle
A vast, dark castle and grounds with gothic, occult and BDSM type jewelry. It also houses the Silent Auction, showcasing limited edition designs from a variety of creators.

Jewelry Fair 2010 IX

The People’s Village
A charming, old-world Bavarian style shops around a town square featuring casual style jewelry.

Jewelry Fair 2010 VIII

Jewelry Fair 2010 XI

Beauty’s Castle
A majestic castle and grounds with formal, fancy and traditional jewelry. It also plays host to the Music & Entertainment events.

Jewelry Fair 2010 XII

The hard work of the builders, organizers, and merchants shines through in the breathtaking aura of these sims, and the power of working together can really strike if if you just stand and look around. With this in mind, it makes sense why the Jewelry Fair Coordinators have once again chosen to support Oxfam International, an international confederation of 14 organizations working together in 99 countries and with partners and allies to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. In this way, we can take what seems just like another fairy tale and make it into a reality for people around the world.
